With regard to Microstation I really couldn't comment as to how good it is, as I haven't used it very much. Maybe some Microstation users could offer an opinion.

Not sure what you mean by this. Can you elaborate onthe question a bit more? J would like to know what kind of software dou you use to Scanning & Vectorising map raster. ( wiseimage, cadraster or something else) |

I don't do a lot of raster to vector conversions but when I do I usually use ArcView or R2V by Able Software.

Microstation is a more powerful cad package than AutoCad, it has all the functionality of AutoCAD, is better suited for cartography and thematic mapping, is easilly integrated into GIS. It also opens dwg drawings without conversion on V8.
In the US its the most popular drafting package, a lot of local authorities in Ireland use it also.

What about Liscad? GenericCad? Turbocad? Carlson?LDD? etc?
I know you only asked about Autocad products but they do take less than half the market.
It would be interesting to see what mix of programmes people use to produce finished drawings. Like say a package to process field work, convert field work to a drawing, drawing package to polish and deliver the finished product etc.

Hello Larry,
Microstation is very big at the state level with our DOT's. (Departments of Transportation) but not used nearly as much by the Engineering and Surveying companies.
I would estimate that AutoDESK products are much more preferred as a whole by those below the state level for most cad work. ESRI is preferred by those doing strictly GIS work. I use them both at times depending on what I am trying to portray.
I run a shop with 13 Engineers, Two Surveyors, Two GIS Cad people and my Right of Way Agent. We all use AutoCAD Map.
We not only do heavy design by also GIS work and we find that AutoCAD Map fits our needs. We do use a program from Eagle Point for our field coding and reduction of our survey data.
My friend, RADU, from Adelade prefers LISCAD.
All software has it's good points and weak points.
We can do around 900 points with RTK/TS in a day and have it reduced to a near finished drawing complete with DTM, Contours and all the blocks inserted in about 15 minutes upon arriving at the office.
Michael my partner (our other Professional Surveyor in my office) has spent a great deal of time getting us to this point.
I think you can get this sort of production out of most of the heavy civil packages but you sure have to spend some development time on the front end.
Michael is our CAD Daddy and takes care of that. I concentrate on export the same information along with the metadata to our GIS layers and coverages.
For vectorization then we use the Map function from Raster Design. We don't do a lot of this sort of work since usually it does not result in very good spatial results. That is our experience.
